Tree Jetties/Root Wad/Tree Revetment

The Tree Jetties and Root Wad (cottonwood and cedar tree) were utilized in the intial grant cycle and have proven effective.  The tree jetties are considered environmentally soft practices that are utilized to displace the high velocity and turbulent flow away from the threatened riverbank.  The Tree Jetties are buried in to the bank and extend into the stream flow.  Tree Revetment is a blanket of trees lining the streambank.  Both practices are beneficial to wildlife through the flow.  Tree Revetment is a blanket of trees lining the streambank.  Both practices are beneficial to wildlife through the creation of habitat.

Tree Jetties/Root Wad Jetties

Condition: 5'-15' Raw bank prior to installation

Design:

• Deciduous or coniferous trees can be utilized as jetties.  Cedar Trees and Cottonwood Trees have been utilized most frequesntly due to their availability.
• The trees are installed horizontally.  Tree Jetties are installed with the root wad buried into the bank.  Root wad structures are installed with the root was extending into the stream.  The jetties will not extend over 30% of the channel width.
• Spacing determined by Natural Resources District Engineer, average spacing is approximately 30-50 feet apart, depending on change in flow.
• Top of bane has a slope between four and seven degrees.

Cost: Approximately $500 per jetty

Tree Revetment

Condition: 5'-15' Raw bank prior to installation

Design:

• Deciduous or Coniferous trees can be utilized as tree revetment.  Cedar Trees and Cottonwood Trees have been utilized most frequently due to their availability.  Revetment consists of lining the eroded streambank with trees.  The trees then need to be secured to the bank using cable or high gauge wire.

Cost: Approximately $12.50 per linear foot
